If Debord’s derivé first grew legs in urban Parisian streets, it now meanders on through contemporary London precincts, visits rural Ireland and ducks a hemisphere to that curiously named New South Wales. Self and Steadmans’ recent passages have subtly morphed an idea of creating direction from indirection, to one that converses with the conscious play of the individual psyche and asserts anew the daily freedom of the non-prescribed and the unmapped. This, in an age of the personal GPS, Google Earth, and countless public lists of ‘Top Ten Places to Visit’ and ‘One Hundred Things To Do Before You Die’.

Does this psychogeographical renaissance hark back to the geographic and temporal freedoms of the independently wealthy Victorian gentle-traveller, or the poverty-choosing, cross-continent life of a writer-traveller-artist of the European 1920s? Is it a marker of the desire for cerebral space and ‘day dream’ meanderings, physical or minds-eye, in an over-connected and overwhelming age?
